Complexity of Clinical Trials Mitigated by Therapeutic Expertise

Research recently completed by the Tufts Center for the Study of Drug Development linked clinical study complexity to increased research costs. Tufts researchers found, for example, the median number of procedures per clinical trial increased by 49% between 2000-03 and 2004-07. The total effort required to complete those procedures grew by 54%.

Therapeutic expertise is one of the most effective ways clinical research organizations (CROs) can help biopharmaceutical and medical device companies contain clinical trial costs, according to Ray Dawkins, MD, Executive Medical Director at Paragon Biomedical.

Dawkins said therapeutic expertise often makes the difference between success and failure in complex clinical trials, including those investigating medical devices.

A project manager knowledgeable about a therapeutic area is better equipped to identify and control risk than a project manager who lacks specific expertise,” said Dawkins. “Even though the biopharmaceutical and medical device markets are improving, our clients still demand the skills and insights needed to navigate within an increasingly complex environment. There is too much riding on a given study or program to put it in the hands of an inexperienced team.”

Dawkins’ expertise crosses major therapeutic areas, including cardiovascular, infectious disease, endocrinology, gastroenterology, and research in plasma-derived proteins and products. His recent work includes medical device research and development for delivery systems and new intravascular catheters for peripheral arterial disease and stroke.

Paragon Biomedical’s expertise includes management of one of the largest randomized trials of drug-eluting stents completed thus far.

Paragon Biomedical is a global, full-service CRO providing Phase I through IV clinical research services and clinical trial support to the world’s pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical device companies.

Paragon Biomedical Continues Growth, Adds Expert Physician to Lead Medical Affairs

The addition of Ray Dawkins, MD, to Paragon Biomedical’s professional staff bolsters the company’s expertise in ways that will help biopharmaceutical and medical device companies conserve closely managed resources, according to Mark Harvill, President and Chief Operating Officer of the global clinical research organization (CRO).

Harvill said Dawkins’ broad experience, which includes medical and scientific leadership roles at biopharmaceutical companies and CROs, provides the balanced perspective critical to success in today’s clinical research environment.

Dawkins joined Paragon on April 19 as Executive Medical Director. He will lead the company’s global Medical Affairs team for continued growth across the full-service CRO’s Phase I through IV clinical research services.

“We’re really excited about having Ray join our team,” said Harvill. “He’s seen clinical research from all vantage points; as a sponsor and within CROs, and has extensive experience outside the US. He understands resource management. He knows how to navigate the regulatory environment. And, just as important, he is completely attuned to the relationship dynamics among sponsor organizations, CROs, and vendors.”

Paragon is “the perfect fit” for meeting the needs of large segments of the biopharmaceutical market, Dawkins said.

“Exciting work is taking place at small and mid-sized companies right now,” he said. “Unfortunately, those companies often don’t get the attention they need from the really large CROs. It is clear that Paragon has not lost touch with the needs of biopharmaceutical companies. They know how to put together customized solutions regardless of the sponsor’s size or global reach.”

Dawkins has nearly 30 years of experience in healthcare and clinical research. Before joining Paragon, he was Senior Medical Director at a global biotherapeutic and biotechnology company. He has strong experience in several therapeutic areas, including cardiovascular, infectious disease, endocrinology, gastroenterology, and recent work in plasma-derived proteins and products.

Since 2005, Dawkins has conducted medical device research and development for delivery systems and the design of new intravascular catheters for cardiovascular indications (peripheral arterial disease and stroke).

With offices in the United States, United Kingdom, and India, Paragon Biomedical is a global, full-service CRO providing Phase I through IV clinical research services and clinical trial support to the world’s pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical device companies.

Gena Reed said Eggleton brings the experience and perspective needed to continue Paragon’s plans for international expansion and growth. Eggleton joined Paragon on January 4 as Vice President, European Operations, and will lead the company’s operational strategy in that region.

“Louise brings so much knowledge to the table,” said Reed. “She understands the pressures, dynamics, and the importance of successful project delivery because she has worked both sides of our industry. Her direct, relevant experience is reassuring to clients, particularly as they watch their research budgets tighten while market expectations soar.”

Reed said Eggleton’s leadership roles at pharmaceutical companies and clinical research organizations (CROs) have given her the refined tools, expertise, and insights needed to conduct global studies.

Eggleton brings nearly 20 years of global operations leadership and clinical trial management experience at pharmaceutical companies and CROs. Before joining Paragon, she was Vice President of Clinical Operations at a global CRO, and prior to that, she held project management and leadership roles at a leading global pharmaceutical company.

The addition of Eggleton to Paragon’s executive team reflects the company’s long-term commitment to attracting talented professionals who have genuine passion for research, according to Mark Harvill, Paragon’s President and Chief Operating Officer.

“We’re really excited to have Louise join us because she brings the exact skills needed to conduct complex, global studies,” said Harvill. “I’ve known her for several years and have seen, on many occasions, the results of her remarkable ability to focus talented, motivated project teams on the achievement of a client’s goals. She’s a tremendous asset.”

Paragon Biomedical Executive Anticipates Surge of Collaborations in Clinical Research

The economic forces that initiated major restructuring throughout the global clinical research industry also sparked a strong sense of shared purpose and community, according to a Paragon Biomedical executive.

The collaborative spirit was evident during formal presentations and informal conversations at the recent Partnerships in Clinical Trials conference in Rotterdam, said Clareece West, Vice President of Global Business Development at Paragon.

Like the rest of the global economy, the clinical research industry has struggled over the past 18 months, according to West.

“But we’ve seen, especially within the last quarter, the beginning of a very subtle turnaround, “she said. “And what makes this positive development even more reassuring is the growing sense that we are all in this together, and that by building genuinely collaborative relationships, we’ll emerge stronger than before,” she said.

West said her perceptions were validated during conversations she and her Paragon colleagues had at the recent conference, which is one of the European clinical research industry’s largest.

“Clients and vendors talked with us about plans for branching out in 2010,” she said. “Much of the expansion will occur in newer emerging regions that will leverage collaborative relationships between Sponsors and CROs.”

West said the collaborative approach has been central to Paragon’s success since the company’s inception.

“For example, Paragon still works with our very first client,” said West. “In fact, 2009 marks our 20-year anniversary with them and one of the main reasons we’ve been together for so long is our shared commitment to each other.”

Paragon Biomedical Collaborates to Conserve Clinical Research Resources

The stakes in clinical research have never been higher. Now operating in an environment in which a one-day delay can result in millions of dollars in lost sales, drug development companies are strengthening their ties with partner organizations to increase efficiencies and reduce timeline disruptions.

As a full-service contract research organization (CRO), Paragon Biomedical understands the vigilance required to protect clinical research resources. To share insights and benefit from the perspectives of others in clinical research, Tenley Koepnick, Associate Director, Site Management Services at Paragon recently attended the Site Solutions Summit.

The annual meeting brings together the key players of clinical research. Attendees at the mid October conference included drug and device development companies (known in the industry as Sponsors), and the contract research organizations (CROs), physicians (Investigators), healthcare professionals and vendors who manage and support Phase I through IV clinical trials.

In addition to attending meeting sessions, Koepnick facilitated a roundtable discussion focused on the issues surrounding site feasibility, the process used by Sponsors and CROs to identify the most qualified facilities for conducting a study. Feasibility is important because a site performing below requirements can delay study start up.

“The majority of clinical research in North America takes place at Investigative Sites, which can be anything from a physician’s office to a stand-alone research facility,” said Koepnick. “Because there are so many variables, so many different types of sites, accurately assessing an individual site’s ability to conduct a study is vitally important.”

Koepnick said the conference helped her understand how expectations are shaped by the interests and perspectives of each group. For example, she realized there is no single definition of what constitutes “site feasibility”.

“It means one thing to a Sponsor, something else to a CRO, and has yet another definition to Investigators and their staff,” she said. “Although it appears pretty simple and straightforward, that insight alone helped us collaboratively develop specific approaches to improve the site feasibility process in ways that are meaningful to Sponsors, CROs, and Investigators.”

Paragon Biomedical to Attend Society for Clinical Data Management (SCDM) Annual Conference

Active support of the Society for Clinical Data Management (SCDM) ensures the continued vitality of the clinical research industry, said Marianne Plaunt, PhD, Vice President, Global Operations at Paragon Biomedical.

Paragon Biomedical, a global, full-service, woman-owned clinical research organization (CRO), has announced that Plaunt and other members of the company’s leadership and data management teams will attend the 2009 SCDM Annual Conference.

“From the emergence of powerful electronic data management tools to the need for innovative partnership models, there are many variables having an impact on the industry right now,” said Plaunt. “Our position at Paragon is to continually build upon our capabilities and expertise in data management and partnerships so we are fully prepared to meet our clients’ needs. One of the many reasons we support SCDM is for the pivotal role they play in supporting meaningful dialogue and developing relationships across the industry.”

“Clinical research organizations like Paragon Biomedical will continue to fill critical roles in helping pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical device companies control rising clinical development costs,” Plaunt continued. “We’ve exhibited at the SCDM conference for several years, but our presence this year is even more important because we want Sponsors to know we are committed to them and their success during these challenging times.”

Plaunt, who holds a doctorate in microbiology, said Paragon’s commitment to innovative solutions is reflected in the company’s ongoing evaluation and adoption of electronic data management tools that allow Sponsors to customize their service needs.

Her participation in the professional society exceeds that of an average SCDM member. She joined the organization in 1998 as an active participant on the membership committee; served on the society’s Board of Trustees for three years, and was chairman of the board in 2004. Since that time she has served as a liaison between the organization and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Paragon Biomedical is a global, full-service, woman-owned CRO providing Phase I thru IV clinical research services and support to the world’s pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical device companies.

The Society for Clinical Data Management is a non-profit professional organization focused on advancing the discipline of clinical data management. The organization’s annual conference will be held October 4-6 in Seattle, Washington.

Paragon Biomedical Appoints Mark Harvill to President and Chief Operating Officer

IRVINE, CALIFORNIA // September 17, 2007 Paragon Biomedical, Inc., a U.S.-based contract research organization (CRO) that manages global Phase I-IV clinical trials, has appointed Mark Harvill to the position of President and Chief Operating Officer.

In making the announcement, Paragons Chief Executive Officer Gena Reed said that Harvills appointment to President is a credit to his accomplishments since joining Paragon in September 2006 as Chief Operating Officer.

Mark has been overseeing and leading the global clinical, data operations, and business development functional areas of our company, and he has done a tremendous job of orienting and integrating himself to the Paragon team, Reed said. He has also been a driver in establishing Paragons strategic messaging and positioning in the global markets we serve. His contributions have been extremely valuable.

Reed said Harvill will continue to oversee the global business development, clinical and data operations business units of the company, but will add responsibilities for business financial services, human resources, information technology, and quality operations.

Paragon Biomedical President/CEO Gena Reed Named 2005 Remarkable Business Woman of the Year

IRVINE, CALIFORNIA // October 25, 2005 Paragon Biomedical President/CEO Gena Reed received the 2005 Remarkable Business Woman of the Year Award from the Orange County Chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO-OC) during their annual awards ceremony Friday, October 14, 2005 at the Hyatt Regency in Irvine, California.
Reed co-founded Irvine-based Paragon Biomedical, an international contract research organization (CRO) that manages Phase I-IV clinical trials in a wide range of therapeutic areas, with her husband Nick in 1989. She was selected by NAWBO-OC because of her contributions to the business community, her commitment to promoting and supporting the growth of women in the workplace, and for her dedication to mentoring and supporting business education for young women and girls.
NAWBO is one of the most respected professional organizations for women in Orange County and throughout the nation. To be recognized by this group of dedicated and successful entrepreneurs and business leaders is an honor, Reed said. I am truly grateful, inspired, and touched by this special acknowledgment.
During the last 16 years, Reed has helped lead and grow Paragon from a two-person start-up that she and husband Nick initially ran out of a spare room in their home, into an international CRO that employs more than 200 Paragon associates worldwide.
From the beginning, Paragon Biomedical, has been dedicated to maintaining a corporate culture based on equal opportunity, diversity and life balance, Reed said. Because of that, we have been able to recruit and retain the industrys top talent.
As a result of those efforts, Paragon has enjoyed high employee satisfaction and one of the lowest turnover rates within the CRO industry.

In 2004, The National Women Business Owners Corporation (NWBOC) recognized Paragon as a certified Woman Owned Business (WOB).
Today, women constitute more than 80 percent of our entire workforce, including four of Paragons eight Executive Leadership Team (ELT) positions, Reed said. We take pride in our WOB status because it allows us to fully recognize, reward and celebrate the diversity that we have created.
Before founding Paragon Biomedical, Reed worked in the pharmaceutical industry where she held positions in Pharmaceutical Sales Management, Consumer Products Sales Management, and Human Resources at Merrell National, Merrell Dow, and Marion Merrell Dow.
Throughout her career, Reed has been actively involved in professional and community-based groups. She currently serves on the Board of Trustees of Girls Incorporated, a national non-profit youth organization, and the United Ways Womens Philanthropy Fund.
Reed received the 1998 Orange County Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award for Healthcare.
She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration.
